5 tips to be a better parent
Zubeida Dasgupta, shares five keys to improve the upbringing and mental health of your children.
1. Connect and tune in to it
To help your children feel safe from the beginning of their life, you must connect and tune in to them, while also setting clear and consistent limits.
If the relationship is in tune, then the child will feel safe and will be able to handle difficulties in the external world.
2. Take care of your own mental health
You must be aware of what is causing you stress, anxiety or depression.
Do you have a support network, be it your partner, friends, family, or local parent meetings?
If we feel calm, if we feel mentally good, we can better support our children
3. Don’t overflow your days with activities
Give your children time and space.
Too many activities put pressure and expectations on the child. That does not allow them to have the space to be themselves and become aware of themselves.
If we have space, both in time and in our mind, we can listen to what our children say, either verbally or non-verbally.
This way the child will be more likely to talk about his feelings.
Gently show interest in what your child is feeling and thinking.
This helps children develop the vocabulary to talk about their feelings.
4. Help him/her to be resilient and resist frustration
Help your child to be more resilient, even from a young age.
When the child manages to control a situation really well, show him what he has done and help him reflect on it.
5. The “other five” basic servings we should eat every day
Health experts say that we should make sure we eat five servings of fruits and vegetables a day to improve our physical health.
But there are five other things that we must also have daily to improve our mental health:
- Live in the moment with mindfulness
- Establish relationships
- Learn something new
- Be generous
Parents should also trust their instincts if they are concerned about their children’s mental health and seek advice from their doctor.
And one more tip…
Have fun! Because laughter releases the hormones of happiness.
